Ideal Weight Calculator

There is no single perfect body weight that fits every person. Bone structure, muscle mass, body fat distribution, and individual preference all influence what a healthy and realistic target looks like. That is why a range is more useful than one magic number. This calculator compares four long-standing ideal weight formulas so you can see the cluster of estimates instead of anchoring to one exact value. That approach gives you a better sense of a practical zone for your height. It is also important to remember where these formulas came from. They were originally created for clinical and medical purposes, such as estimating drug dosing, not for setting athletic or physique goals. If you lift weights, carry more muscle, or naturally have a larger frame, you may sit above these estimates and still be healthy. Use the results as a reference point, then combine them with body composition, performance, and how you feel.

For informational purposes only

This calculator provides estimates based on established scientific formulas. Results are not medical or nutritional advice. Individual needs vary. Consult a registered dietitian or healthcare provider before making significant dietary changes, especially if you have a medical condition.

Important caveat

Ideal weight formulas were originally designed for medical contexts, not athletic performance. Muscular individuals and athletes may healthily exceed these ranges. Focus on body composition and how you feel rather than a specific number.

Frequently asked questions

What is my ideal weight for my height?

There is rarely a single exact answer. Most ideal-weight formulas produce a range based primarily on height and sex, which is why this calculator shows multiple estimates. That range is usually more helpful than a single value because it reflects the uncertainty built into the formulas.

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?

No single formula is universally most accurate. Devine is widely used clinically, Robinson and Miller are later refinements, and Hamwi is an older reference point. For general use, the overlap between the formulas often tells you more than picking one winner.

Does ideal weight differ for men and women?

Yes. Most traditional ideal-weight formulas include different constants for men and women because average body composition and frame size differ. Even so, those averages do not fully capture your individual build, training history, or muscularity.

Should I focus on ideal weight or body fat percentage?

Body fat percentage is often more informative for fitness goals because it tells you more about composition. Ideal weight can still be useful for getting a rough range, but body fat percentage, waist size, and performance usually provide better context when you want to change how you look or feel.

What is a healthy weight range vs ideal weight?

A healthy weight range is broader and usually reflects where health markers are likely to be acceptable for a given height. Ideal weight sounds more precise, but in practice it is also an estimate. Thinking in ranges rather than fixed targets is more realistic and more useful.
